Thats how cargo was stowed and carried before containers came along. Piece by piece, one at a time - sometimes the crates or cartons broke open....And the wharfies and longshoremen were so honest and caring...... Then shipping containers arrived on the scene and everything changed. I was on this containership and its beautiful sister (Ariake and Arafura) for a few years. Brisbane to Yokohama in 6 days 19 hours - that's fast for a ship! But instead of a week in each port, it was now in and and out in a day, and the big container terminals were located way out of town without a bar in sight. Bugger that - I'm off....!
